Mandatory Service Announcement from Google Cloud
Default limits for QueryUsagePerDay and QueryUsagePerUserPerDay will change.
|
Dear vv,
We’re writing to inform you about an upcoming change to BigQuery’s cost management for on-demand queries starting September 1, 2025. This change will help you to manage costs and avoid accidental cost overruns when using the on-demand compute pricing model.
We understand this change may require some planning and have provided additional information below to help you with the transition.
What you need to know
What's changing
- Quota changes:
QueryUsagePerDay and QueryUsagePerUserPerDay quotas will only apply to on-demand usage.
- New project default: The default limit for
QueryUsagePerDay quota will be set to 200 TiB in all new projects created after September 1, 2025. Please see details below on how you can check these values.
- Existing projects set to "unlimited": Your existing projects (attached), currently set to "unlimited" for these quotas, will be updated to a custom limit based on the peak usage from the last 30 days and sufficient headroom for workload growth. We reserve the right to set the limit to a different value than listed in this communication, if there are changes in usage patterns.
- Audit log visibility: You can monitor these changes in Logs Explorer (the
roles/logging.viewer IAM role is required) to see corresponding updates as these changes are implemented. Please see an example of log entries below:
What stays the same
- Existing projects with custom limits: If your existing projects are already using custom quota values (not "unlimited") for either of
QueryUsagePerDay and QueryUsagePerUserPerDay , as of September 1, 2025, no changes will be made to QueryUsagePerDay .
- Full control and flexibility: You can still adjust these quota limits anytime using the following methods:
What you need to do
Action advised:
- Review and set an appropriate usage limit for
QueryUsagePerDay and QueryUsagePerUserPerDay based on your on-demand query usage before September 1, 2025.
- Check your project’s daily on-demand query processing history to understand your typical usage.
- Check if the system limits meet your needs. You might get ‘quota exceeded’ errors when you run complex or expensive queries.
- Consider creating appropriate usage alerts for the set limits using Cloud Monitoring.
For more information, refer to Manage quotas using the gcloud CLI (beta).
We’ll send you a reminder before the default limit change takes effect starting September 1, 2025.
