Hello vv,
This communication is intended to remind current BigQuery customers regarding an enhancement to your service and opt out actions that may be taken by July 7, 2025.
We’ve recently introduced Gemini AI-assisted features within BigQuery. These capabilities are designed to enhance productivity from building data pipelines, performing analytics and data science, to data governance and operations.
The following core features are available at no additional charge under your existing agreement. To facilitate their use, we’ll be enabling the Gemini for Google Cloud API in your projects where BigQuery is active:
- SQL Code Generation and Explanation
- Python Code Generation and Completion
- Data Canvas
- Data Preparation
What you need to know
Key changes:
- API enablement: Starting July 14, 2025, Gemini for Google Cloud API (cloudaicompanion.googleapis.com) will be automatically enabled in your projects. This activation will allow you to use specific AI-powered data analytics features in BigQuery, powered by Gemini, without the need for separate admin API activation for each project.
- Role updates: Starting May 22, 2025, the predefined BigQuery Studio User and Admin roles include the Gemini for Google Cloud User and Admin permissions, expanding their existing capabilities. If you use custom roles, include these permissions in them to enable access to Gemini assistive features in BigQuery.
To gain access to the Gemini in BigQuery features, grant IAM permissions to your users in the appropriate project(s).
Potential impact:
Gemini for Google Cloud is an API that powers other generative AI and assistive features. We’ve put together a list of features in Gemini for Google Cloud and how to turn them off.
Note:
- The above-mentioned Gemini in BigQuery features are in scope for annual compliance certification for 2025, to be completed later this year.
- Gemini in BigQuery doesn't use your data to train or fine-tune its models, as described in the terms of data usage.
- Any projects within an Assured Workload folder will be excluded from auto enablement.
What you need to do
No action is required from you if you wish to proceed with automatic API enablement. If you would like to opt-out, please follow these steps:
You may also prevent the use of the API using the resource usage restriction organization policy.
Important considerations:
- To opt out, you must provide a list of projects (by ID or Number) OR organization ID(s)
- If you decide to opt out, the Gemini for Google Cloud API will not be enabled automatically and the Gemini in BigQuery features listed above will not get activated
- If you decide to use this API, after opting out, you will need to enable it manually
- You may also enable and disable Gemini in BigQuery features individually
- Any automation scripts that rely on the status of the above listed API, whether enabled or disabled, may need to be updated accordingly
Your affected projects are listed in the attachment below.
